Keshia was recently interviewed by Nicki Thomas from the Toronto Star as the countdown to this Sunday's Juno Awards is winding up. By all appearances, Keshia Chanté is an adult.

She’s got her own place in Yorkville, a yen for high fashion and a couple of high-profile romances to her name. That doesn’t stop the Ottawa-born singer, just 13 when she picked up her first major music award, from acting like a kid.

“I operate very young sometimes. Last week I met Minnie Mouse for the first time and I almost cried. I legitimately almost cried,” she says with a laugh. “I was so excited.”

Chanté will celebrate her 23rd birthday in June, shortly after the release of her third album, Night & Day. Her first two albums already spawned 8 Top-10 hits, and earned her 6 Canadian Urban Music Awards and a Juno. Now, two singles from the new album have nabbed nominations at this Sunday’s Juno awards in Toronto.

Test Drive, from the Day side of the album, is up for best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, the category she won in 2005. Table Dancer, a synth-heavy track from the Night side, is in the running for Best Dance Recording of the Year.

Chanté says she’s most excited about the R&B nomination because, like all the songs from Day, the material for Test Drive came straight from the pages of her diary. Its songs are very personal but very relatable, she says, and deal mostly with being “in love, heartbroken, over it.” (Previously linked to Drake, Chanté is now reportedly dating hockey goalie Ray Emery, who appears in the Test Drive video.)

The burst of songwriting came after a period of working with several different songwriters and producers, including Neo and the teams behind Missy Elliot and Andre 3000, but feeling disconnected from the work, she says.

“Everything they do is kind of branded in their sound. I needed to figure out, ‘what’s my sound, what do I do?” she says. “I ended up writing a lot of stuff but it was dark and moody. Once I got that all out of my system, I started making Table Dancer and a bunch of other dance songs. Then I had two bodies of work that were literally like night and day and it just made sense.”

Set U Free, penned by ubiquitous pop collaborator Taio Cruz, is the album’s only song from an outside writer. While Chanté says she felt territorial about adding it to the album, the infectious tune fit with Night’s vibe, which is “all about having fun.”

“I love what’s going on with radio right now. There are a lot of dance records, but it’s all feel-good music,” she says. “I want to be part of that.”

The song’s racy lyrics (“Got your body all over me, then you leave me / What you need, you can get from me / Don’t you know that I can set your body free”) aren’t an attempt to distance herself from a younger image, Chanté says.

“I heard it and I loved it and I felt right about it. If you’re honest in your work and you’re honest as a person, there’s really no image. There’s just you.”

Chanté says people around her never forced to be a certain way.

“They’ve always given me say but I didn’t know what I wanted, so it didn’t really matter,” she says. “Now, more than ever, I’m sure of what I want.”

Night & Day: 6 Weeks Until Completion
New developments in the progression of Keshia's highly anticipated 3rd Album, Night & Day. Keshia tweeted today that the countdown has officially begun on the finalization stages of the album. At this point and time, it's projected that it will see a Late Spring- Early Summer release. Keshia's is presently at the studio recording as you read this.

 Keshia had a fitting with world-renown New York designer Romona Keveza (known for her innovative glamorous Evening Wear & Wedding Gowns) on Tuesday of this week for her dress for the upcoming Junos. A lot of designers have been tweeting about having submitted dresses to Keshia for the star-studded event that is sure to have all of Hollywood talking. You've got time to set your DVR in advance #KCRyders! Hopefully this is a full segment and not a :30 second quick-clip. I'd be very disappointed.

RANDOM: Can Keshia Secure her Juno Nominations?

Don't forget KC fans, our girl Keshia is nominate for two, count em' two Juno Awards this year. My best bet is that she'll snag her Juno for Table Dancer. Everyday I see tweets about DJ's and radio hosts spinning Table Dancer on Canadian stations so she's more than likely a shoe-in for that category (Best Dance Recording of the Year). She may as well win her Juno in the R&B category as well, because according to a blogger page I read recently Keshia is the most popular artist in that category. I'm not a bias fan, but I would really love it if Keshia took home both Juno Awards on March 27th. That would definitely do great things for her career wise, and cement her further as an artist in an industry of make-shift and puppet-like counterparts. The one thing that sets Keshia apart from her contemporaries is that, she's thinking on a larger scale as apposed to what sounds hot "right now". It's understandable to me the route that she chose with tracks like 'Set U Free' and 'Table Dancer' sound-wise for Night & Day. At the end of the day, she's gotta eat and the current Euro-Pop/Club/Rave trend in records is what's making paper right now. (See 'Only Girl (In The World), Yeah 3x's, Dynamite) The industry still has a shread of hope left for classic music with songs like 'Test Drive' and 'If You Say' and most definitely, 'Hang My Jersey Up' from Keshia which all have mass appeal. Keshia in my opinion deserves to breach the US Market. Why? Because those three songs, have 'Grammy Nominated' written all over them. And though I'm happy that Keesh got nominated for two Juno's it's about time she reached out to her fans worldwide. Keshia tweeted that we should expect her music to hit US-ITunes in two weeks... Cross your fingers.

UPCOMING: KC To Attend Juno Fan Fare 2011 @ Much Music

The Junos are almost here KC fans! Are you ready and excited to see if our girl Keshia Chante will take home her two Junos she's been nominated for? Juno weekend 2011 is set to be crazy intense and jam packed with some of Canada's hottest stars being interviewed, giving fans autographs, Much with their freebie giveaways, and live performances. On March 26th, 2011, the day before the The Junos Awards, The Junos are taking over Much Music this year for Juno Fan Fare 2011. Keshia will be in attendance along with other Juno nominees. No word yet on if she's performing, but I have a feeling that she may just perform her new single 'Set U Free'. If she did, you know that would be a great promotional effort right? Right. Today, Wednesday, March 23 at 5:00PM at MuchMusic wristbands for the Juno Fan Fare were given out. They  will be on a first come, first served basis. Keshia spoke with them about her philanthropic work with CANFAR, as well as the upcoming Juno Awards 2011 in March and her new album Night & Day. She looks very ecstatic and bubbly! In case you missed Keshia's interview on New Music Live yesterday, no worries! We've got it right here! A big thanks for Linda our LKC Media-Guru for uploading this for us via her YouTube. Keshia speaks about helping pass out Heart-O-Grams at Riverdale Collegiate on yesterday; as well as HIV/AIDS statistics and encouraging everyone to get educated and stay safe. She also speaks about her upcoming trip to Kenya in May with CANFAR! While in Africa she'll be helping build an orphanage. Towards the ending of the interview she speaks about her two Juno nominations and her new upcoming 3rd Album, Night & Day.
